Junior Coding Project

Inquiry Question:

Would learning to program with block coding help junior TLDSB Photostudents feel more confident with their problem solving skills?

Project Description:

Students are great at using programs on computers, but most of them do not understand what the computer is doing. By learning to write code, students will be learning not only how to consume technology, but to also be imaginative creators of technological artefacts.

Not only is coding considered to be 'cool', it also helps to build skill sets, such as:

  • Logical thinking
  • Problem solving
  • Persistence
  • Collaboration
  • Communication

TLDSBWithin most of the programming that the students will be doing, there will be math skills that will be drawing upon to help 'make things work'. For example, the Frozen programming activity from, requires students use their basic skills of geometry and drawing angles.

We will be focussing on how students adapt to learning how to program for the first time and develop their problem solving skills.

Alignment with Board Improvement Plan for Student Achievement and Well-Being

In Trillium Lakelands District School Board, every student is provided with multiple opportunities to achieve their full potential. To support this goal, we will:

  • Use tiered intervention and differentiated instruction to reach all students.
  • Provide opportunities for innovation geared toward better student engagement through technology.
