Effective Literacy: Assessment and Evaluation through Technology

Inquiry Question:CDSBEO Photo

What impact will technology tools have when used to leverage assessment and evaluation for student success?

Project Description:

The Literacy Consultant alongside the TEL (Technology Consultant) and Curriculum Consultant will build capacity by explicitly modelling the tools and strategies to improve students’ effective critical literacy skills and enhance assessment and evaluation practices.  Educators provide greater opportunity for student success through meaningful assessment, timely feedback, descriptive feedback, dropbox- portfolio of student work and teacher feedback, student usage and progress, etc.

Through the use of the communication tools of Office 365 and Brightspace, teachers will develop students’ knowledge and understanding of Critical Literacy skills with a focus on online sources of information.

Technology tools- Office 365- OneNote, Word Online, Power Point Online, Microsoft Mix, Brightspace- Quiz tool, Dropbox, Audio feedback, Gradebook, Turnitin, Usage tracking/progress, Student work and teacher/peer feedback portfolio.

Critical Literacy (as defined by The Adolescent Literacy Guide)- the ability for students to critically analyze and evaluate the meaning of text as it relates to issues of equity, power and social justice to inform a critical stance, response and/or action. For example, students who are strong in Critical Literacy can evaluate sources for bias, reliability, fairness, and validity.

Alignment with Board Improvement Plan for Student Achievement and Well-Being

The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario plans to align the Learning Connections project with our overall BIPSA question of: "How does a collaborative inquiry inform student thinking and learning?" As teachers, we need to be making visible connections between data collection, student thinking and achievement, and the inquiry process. We need to ask questions to extend our student thinking and we need to use technology to enhance student learning.

CDSBEOIncluded in our BIPSA is our Technology Action Plan, which promotes the use of cloud-based technologies like Office 365.The roll-out and implementation will be a large portion of the Learning Connections project. This collaborative inquiry will also support meaningful transitions for our students, as grades 7 – 10 teachers will be collaborating on this initiative.

Our goal is to make the learning of literacy enjoyable and meaningful through the use of a variety of devices and the appropriate integration of technology. Our team will co-plan, co-teach and co-debrief throughout the year. We will use the Teacher Professional Learning Cycle to incorporate the use technology in our classrooms to foster an environment that is responsive to student voice, confidence and student engagement.
